Canned Spinach is a temporary installation that observes Oakland as historical center of vegetable and fruit canning, including the Del Monte canning company, established in 1916. The installation reveals the cultural landscape of Oakland as one that has a current and historical connection to the California agrarian landscape.
The newly renovated café featured spinach dishes during the opening months and visitors were encouraged to help with the harvest from the galvanized "cans". Canned Spinach connects art with natural and cultural history, and the cultural landscape of Oakland.
