Rosa Parks - home to the now defunct Herman Keifer hospital complex and origin of the 1967 Detroit riots - is a cultural landscape rich in history, with a kind of wilderness grown over. The archaeological approach to the landscape framework sifts through the physical remains and temporal marking to pull forward the site’s history and create a palimpsest. The design sets forth a new direction by building upon the sites cultural and institutional memory. The hybrid landscape fuses commemoration and artists, infrastructure and trails, nursery gardens and jobs to develop a new landscape pattern which builds upon evolving history of the site.
